MURANO GLASS

Venetian Glass has been made for over 1500 years on the Venetian Island of Murano, and so it is most famously known as Murano Glass.   This became Europe’s elite glassmaking centre in the 15th and 16th centuries.

It is famous for vases, chandeliers and mirrors and the multi-coloured glass called “millefiori” is extremely beautiful. (This word is a combination of the Italian words “mille” (thousand) and “fiori” (flowers).  Millefiori paperweights are very eye-catching because of the many colours appearing in them and they make a perfect gift also popular as a gift idea is the classic animal figures.   In our cabinets at The Old Mill we have a vast selection to choose from at very affordable prices starting from £25.

Murano glass beads were made by the Venetians at the beginning of the 13th century and were used then mostly as Rosary beads.    This beautiful glass is extremely fashionable today as jewellery items and is worn as earrings, pendants, bracelets, etc.

In the 1700’s Venetian glass was most well-known for its Chandeliers and ornamental Mirrors.  The Chandeliers being adorned with flowers and intricate glass work and were used as interior lights in theatres and important rooms in palaces.

Here at The Old Mill we currently have in stock a good choice of Murano vases which have been individually hand blown (this is what makes every item so unique) and each vase is mostly multi-coloured.  Prices range from £35 to £150.
